SevoFlo is an inhalation anesthetic with a variety of benefits. These benefits are the result of several unique properties of sevoflurane:

Safety

The depth of anesthesia may be altered easily and rapidly. SevoFlo (sevoflurane) is compatible with barbiturates, propofol and other commonly used intravenous anesthetics. Among inhalation anesthetics, sevoflurane has low arrythmogenic potential.

Speed

A low solubility coefficient (blood:gas partition coefficient of 0.68) affords quick entry into the bloodstream, escape into the brain and rapid elimination from the lungs.

Ease of Use

SevoFlo (sevoflurane) is indicated for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in dogs. Sighthounds were found to be comparable to other breeds in the quality of induction, maintenance and recovery.

Induction

SevoFlo (sevoflurane) - Advantages during induction:

  • SevoFlo (sevoflurane) has a non-pungent odor and can be used for mask inductions.
  • Minimal irritation of the airway and the eyes.
  • SevoFlo (sevoflurane) causes minimal salivation.
  • Faster mask inductions (data on file).

Maintenance

SevoFlo (sevoflurane) - Advantages during maintenance:

  • SevoFlo (sevoflurane) provides excellent control of the anesthetic plane during maintenance.
  • Rapid control of depth during maintenance.

Recovery

SevoFlo (sevoflurane) - Advantages during recovery:

  • Low blood gas solubility means recovery from SevoFlo (sevoflurane) is smooth and rapid.
  • Fast progress through the excitement phase.

Indication

SevoFlo (sevoflurane) is indicated for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in dogs.

Most Common Adverse Reactions:

The most frequently reported adverse reactions during maintenance anesthesia were hypotension, followed by tachypnea, muscle tenseness, excitation, apnea, muscle fasciculations and emesis.

Contraindications:

SevoFlo (sevoflurane) is contraindicated in dogs with a known sensitivity to SevoFlo (sevoflurane) or other halogenated agents.

Warnings:

  • Like other inhalation anesthetics, SevoFlo (sevoflurane) is a profound respiratory depressant.
  • Respiration must be monitored closely in the dog and supported when necessary with supplemental oxygen and/or assisted ventilation.
  • Due to SevoFlo's (sevoflurane) low solubility in blood, increasing the concentration may result in rapid hemodynamic changes compared to other volatile anesthetics.
  • Potassium hydroxide containing CO2 absorbents (e.g., BARALYME®) are not recommended for use with sevoflurane.
